CHIMAR is an innovating R&D SME, which develops and provides competitive chemical technology and services for the industrial production of adhesives and chemicals as well as for their application in the manufacture of composite wood-based panels, engineered wood and impregnated/lamination papers (all applied in furniture, building construction, insulation etc.).

CHIMAR is pioneer in technology for bio-based adhesive systems, substituting their petrochemical raw materials with renewable ones derived from lignocellulosic natural materials and wastes. CHIMAR expertise also extends to the development of novel composite panels using non-wood biomass materials, agricultural and industrial residues as well as recycled materials.Moreover, CHIMAR presents a strong participation in funded R&D projects and networks aiming to boost sustainability and growth in its industry field.

The company premises include advanced chemical and technical labs and pilots for adhesive and wood panel production and evaluation. Promising technology that is developed by CHIMAR, is validated at the industrial scale prior to market introduction.

CHIMAR expertise counts since 1977 having already served more than 100 industrial sites in more than 40 countries.Today, the particleboard and MDF panels produced using CHIMAR technology and services account for over 10% of the annual global production, while CHIMAR estimated market share in wood adhesive technology market is equal to 33% on a global level.

CHIMAR Hellas in ProEnrich EU Research Funded Project

In the framework of EU funded H2020-BBI-JTI project ProEnrich "Development of novel functional proteins and bioactive ingredients from rapeseed, olive, tomato and citrus fruit side streams", CHIMARs role was to develop bio-based adhesives for composite wood panels using the non-edible protein and phenolic fractions derived therein.

The said programme was successfully finalised back in 2021, while at the same time, the Consortium managed to fullfil all the objectives set in the proposal, namely to:

Determine the components with the highest market potential from the four residue streams being investigated, as evaluated by the project industrial end user partners;
Undertake a range of bio-refining processes that yield high quantities of high-purity functional proteins and bioactive components;
Develop the biorefinery processes in pilot scale, advancing the best businesses cases to demonstration scale.
Apply components isolated from the bio-refining into key market areas and demonstrate their fitness for purpose;
Undertake a system analysis to make these processes technically and economically attractive;
Undertake sustainability assessments of process alternatives to ensure that any new product ranges developed provide environmental benefits.
Carry out a feasibility assessment of the Pro-Enrich business model.
