Zynnon, a Swiss startup developing a solution to detect the risk of respiratory infection transmission in hospitals and health facilities, has closed a CHF800,000 seed funding round led by a group of angel investors.

Zynnon’s mission is to empower health facilities to improve infection prevention and control. It was born out of the observation that hospital-acquired infections have long been one of the most serious risks for patients, especially those who stay for weeks or months. But recent data show that more than two years into the pandemic, hospitals still have a long way to go to prevent transmission within their premises. With the highly contagious Omicron variant, up to 20% of people hospitalized caught the disease in hospitals.

Zynnon’s solution will monitor the risk of infection transmission in indoor settings in real time using multimodal contactless sensing and cloud-based artificial intelligence. The proposed system will be developed using a cross-field approach combining engineering, data analytics, and medical expertise. The development process will incorporate inputs from clinicians and domain experts, and a pilot study with clinical experts will form the basis for the system’s functional validation.

The funding will enable the company to accelerate the development of its solution and to perform real-world testing in hospitals and health facilities.

Zynnon, ein Schweizer Start-up, das Lösungen zur Ermittlung des Übertragungsrisikos von Atemwegsinfektionen in Krankenhäusern und Gesundheitseinrichtungen entwickelt, erhält von der schweizerischen Agentur für Innovationsförderung Innosuisse für die Umsetzung des Projektes Fördergelder in Höhe von rund 800‘000 CHF. Zynnon arbeitet mit dem Schweizer Innovationszentrum CSEM und dem Institut und Hochschule für Gesundheit La Source zusammen.

Eine essentielle Lösung zur Vermeidung der Ausbreitung von Atemwegsinfektionen und im Krankenhaus erworbenen Infektionen

Atemwegsinfektionen sind die dritthäufigste Todesursache weltweit, sie sind jährlich für bis zu 4 % der Todesfälle verantwortlich. Sie belasten das Gesundheitssystem erheblich, ihre Kosten belaufen sich allein in den Vereinigten Staaten auf 100 Milliarden US-Dollar jährlich. Am stärksten betroffen sind Menschen ab 65 Jahren, sie machen 85 % der Todesfälle durch Atemwegsinfektionen aus.

Nosokomiale (durch Krankenhausaufenthalt entstandene), viral bedingte Atemwegsinfektionen (HARVI) werden als Ursache von Morbidität und Mortalität unterschätzt. Bei Krankenhauspatienten, insbesondere bei älteren Menschen mit multiplen Begleiterkrankungen, besteht ein erhöhtes Risiko für schwere Krankheitsverläufe im Zusammenhang mit viral bedingten Atemwegsinfektionen, die sie sich in geschlossenen Räumen zuziehen können.

Nosokomiale Infektionen stellen schon seit langem einen der größten Risikofaktoren für Patienten dar, dies gilt insbesondere für Patienten, deren Krankenhausaufenthalt sich über mehrere Wochen oder Monate hinzieht. Aktuelle Daten zeigen jedoch, dass die Krankenhäuser trotz mehr als zwei Jahren Pandemie noch nicht in der Lage sind, Übertragungen innerhalb ihrer Räumlichkeiten zu vermeiden. Bei der hochansteckenden Omicron Variante sind bis zu 20% der Krankenhausbehandlungen auf Infektionen zurückzuführen, die  in einem Krankenhaus aufgelesen wurden.

Der Luftweg ist ein belegter Übertragungsweg für zahlreiche Erreger, die z. B. Grippe, Tuberkulose, Masern und in jüngster Zeit SARS-CoV-2 auslösen. Während die medizinische Forschung sich der Suche nach Heilverfahren und Arzneimitteln zur Bekämpfung der Auswirkungen von Vireninfektionen widmet, zielt die Forschung im Engineering-Bereich darauf ab, die Hilfsmittel und Methoden zur Analyse des Infektionsrisikos, insbesondere in Innenräumen, zu verbessern. Dies geschieht mit Hilfe einer Modellierung der Virusübertragung über den Luftweg mit dem Ziel, vorbeugende oder kurative Maßnahmen zu entwickeln.

Befähigung von Gesundheitseinrichtungen zur Verbesserung der Infektionsprävention und -kontrolle

Zur Unterstützung des Zynnon-Projekts, dessen Ziel es ist, die Echtzeit-Risikoüberwachung im Zusammenhang mit über den Luftweg übertragener Krankheitserreger in Innenräumen zu verbessern, bewilligte die Schweizer Innovationsagentur Innosuisse Fördermittel in Höhe von rund 800‘000 CHF. Das Projekt wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schweizer Innovationszentrum CSEM und dem Institut und Hochschule für Gesundheit La Source über einen Zeitraum von 24 Monaten entwickelt und validiert.

Diese Förderung durch Innosuisse veranschaulicht die Bedeutung unseres Projekts zur Kontrolle und Verhinderung der Ausbreitung von Infektionskrankheiten in Krankenhäusern und Gesundheitseinrichtungen“, merkt Khaled Abousaleh, Gründer und Geschäftsführer von Zynnon, an.

Ziel dieser partnerschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit ist der Aufbau des ersten Systems zur Messung des Infektionsrisikos in Innenräumen mit Hilfe multimodaler kontaktloser Sensorik und Cloud-basierter künstlicher Intelligenz. Das vorgeschlagene System wird unter Anwendung eines fachübergreifenden Ansatzes, der Engineering, Datenanalyse und medizinisches Fachwissen kombiniert, entwickelt. Der Entwicklungsprozess bezieht Beiträge von Klinikern und Fachexperten mit ein, eine Pilotstudie mit klinischen Experten bildet die Grundlage für die funktionale Validierung des Systems.

Zynnon ist nun dabei, die erste Prüfung unter realen Patientenumgebungen am Inselspital, dem Universitätsspital Bern, zu starten. Ziel ist es, Echtzeitdaten zu sammeln, um das Modell der künstlichen Intelligenz zur Vorhersage des Übertragungsrisikos zu bauen und anzupassen.

Zynnon, une startup suisse qui développe une solution pour détecter le risque de transmission d’infections respiratoires dans les hôpitaux et les établissements de santé, reçoit une aide à l’innovation d’environ 800 000 CHF pour la mise en œuvre du projet, de la part d’Innosuisse, l’Agence suisse pour l’innovation. Zynnon travaille en partenariat avec le Centre d’innovation suisse (CSEM) et l’Institut et Haute École de la Santé La Source.

Une solution vitale pour éviter la propagation des infections respiratoires et nosocomiales

Les infections respiratoires sont la troisième cause de mortalité dans le monde et représentent jusqu’à 4 % des décès chaque année. Elles constituent une charge financière énorme pour le système de santé, qui s’élève à 100 milliards de dollars par an rien qu’aux États-Unis. Les personnes âgées de 65 ans et plus sont les plus touchées, puisqu’elles représentent 85 % des décès dus à des infections respiratoires.

Les infections virales respiratoires nosocomiales (HARVI) sont une source sous-estimée de morbidité et de mortalité. Les patients hospitalisés, en particulier les personnes âgées présentant des comorbidités multiples, sont plus exposés aux conséquences graves des infections virales respiratoires qu’ils peuvent contracter dans des espaces confinés.

Les infections nosocomiales constituent depuis longtemps l’un des risques les plus graves pour les patients, en particulier ceux qui restent hospitalisés pendant des semaines ou des mois. Mais des données récentes montrent que, plus de deux ans après le début de la pandémie, les hôpitaux ont encore beaucoup de chemin à parcourir pour prévenir la transmission dans leurs locaux. Avec le variant Omicron, hautement contagieux, jusqu’à 20 % des cas hospitalisés ont contracté leur infection dans les hôpitaux.

La transmission par voie aérienne est une voie de contagion reconnue pour de nombreux pathogènes tels que la grippe, la tuberculose, la rougeole et, plus récemment, le SARS-CoV-2. Alors que la recherche médicale se concentre sur la découverte de cures et de remèdes pour contrer les effets d’un virus, la recherche dans le domaine de l’ingénierie cherche à améliorer les outils et les méthodes utilisés pour évaluer le risque d’infection, en particulier dans les environnements intérieurs, en modélisant la transmission du virus par voie aérienne afin de développer des mesures préventives ou curatives.

Donner aux établissements de santé les moyens d’améliorer la prévention et le contrôle des infections

Pour soutenir le projet de Zynnon visant à améliorer la surveillance en temps réel des risques liés à la transmission de pathogènes par voie aérienne à l’intérieur des bâtiments, l’Agence fédérale suisse pour l’innovation, Innosuisse, a accordé à notre projet une aide d’environ 800 000 CHF. Le projet sera développé et validé en collaboration avec le Centre d’innovation suisse (CSEM) et l’Institut et Haute École de la Santé La Source sur une période de 24 mois.

Ce financement d’Innosuisse démontre l’importance de notre projet visant à contrôler et prévenir la propagation des maladies infectieuses dans les hôpitaux et les établissements de santé », commente Khaled Abousaleh, fondateur et CEO de Zynnon.

Le partenariat prévoit la fabrication du premier système permettant de mesurer le risque de transmission d’infections dans des environnements intérieurs en utilisant une détection multimodale sans contact et une intelligence artificielle basée sur le cloud. Le système proposé sera développé à l’aide d’une approche pluridisciplinaire combinant l’ingénierie, l’analyse de données et l’expertise médicale. Le processus de développement intégrera les contributions des cliniciens et des experts du domaine, et une étude pilote avec des experts cliniques servira de base à la validation fonctionnelle du système.

Des partenaires solides

Zynnon se prépare maintenant à démarrer la première évaluation dans un environnement réel de patients à l’Inselspital, l’hôpital universitaire de Berne. Les objectifs sont de collecter des données en temps réel afin de construire et d’ajuster le modèle d’intelligence artificielle de prédiction des risques de transmission.
