Sternula is on a mission to start a digital revolution in the maritime sector. Maritime authorities and industry have been working on a standardized and low-cost system for data exchange over the past decade. With the ITU allocation of crucial radio spectrum in 2019, the solution is finally here in the form of the "VHF Data Exchange System" (VDES).

VDES is a combined ship-to-ship, ship-to-coast, and ship-to-satellite system for maritime digital services with low data rates. It is an extension of the popular AIS system deployed in more than 200,000 vesssels worldwide, and it works over cheap VHF antennas - also for the satellite connection.

Sternula is the world's first commercial VDES satellite operator. Our first satellite is scheduled for launch in 2022, and additional 60 satellites will be launch before 2030.
