Living Soils: Pioneering Soil Health Restoration Through Microbiome Solutions
At Living Soils, we are dedicated to revitalizing agricultural soils by harnessing the power of native soil microbiomes. Our mission is to offer a sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective solution that reduces farmers' dependence on synthetic fertilizers and chemical inputs while restoring soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting long-term agricultural sustainability.
The Problem We Address
Modern agricultural practices have led to the degradation of soils, resulting in reduced soil fertility, diminished biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to pests and diseases. Farmers face rising input costs, declining yields, and environmental pressures, often struggling to maintain profitable and sustainable operations. In particular, intensive farming methods, overuse of chemical fertilizers, and soil compaction have disrupted the natural balance of soil ecosystems.
This degradation not only compromises crop productivity but also contributes to broader environmental issues, including soil erosion, water contamination, greenhouse gas emissions, and a decline in beneficial soil organisms. The urgency to restore soil health is becoming increasingly evident as sustainable agriculture gains traction and the need for resilient food systems grows.
Our Solution
Living Soils offers an innovative, microbiome-based soil amendment designed to regenerate soil ecosystems and restore their natural vitality. Our solution leverages native soil microbes—locally sourced and enriched—to reintroduce beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that play crucial roles in nutrient cycling, disease suppression, and soil structure improvement.
By applying our soil microbiome solution, farmers can:
- Reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
- Enhance soil structure, water retention, and organic matter content.
- Improve nutrient availability and uptake.
- Boost plant resilience against pests and diseases.
- Foster long-term soil health and sustainability.
Circular and Local Approach
Sustainability is at the core of our operations. We utilize locally sourced raw materials, including sheep wool, as a base ingredient in our microbiome product. Sheep wool, often considered an agricultural waste product, contains essential nutrients that enhance microbial activity, providing a unique substrate for microbial growth. This approach reduces waste, promotes circularity, and aligns with regional environmental goals.
Our plan is to produce our microbiome solution locally in Drenthe or Friesland, ensuring a unique microbial fingerprint adapted to local soil conditions. By producing the product locally, we reduce environmental impact, minimize transport emissions, and support the local economy.
Our Vision for the Future
Living Soils envisions a future where agricultural soils are rich in biodiversity, resilient to climate change, and capable of sustaining productive, profitable, and environmentally responsible farming. Our ambition is to lead a soil health revolution by providing farmers with the tools to rebuild their soils, enhance yields, and achieve economic viability while protecting natural resources.
