Blade–Made
About your organization / profile
Blade–Made gives the ever-growing material stream of composite wind turbine waste a second life as structural building material, offering a circular alternative to concrete and steel.
Blade–Made has a Dual Impact strategy:
- Saving Resources: the global production of steel and concrete is responsible for 17% of the global greenhouse gas emissions (WEF) and 50% of the global extraction of (virgin) natural resources.
- Reduced Waste: the wind industry is responsible for a large waste stream of hard to recycle GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer) materials in the form of wind turbine blades and nacelles. We are dealing with NL 600 ton in 2025 (TNO), EU 400,000 ton in 2040 (Wind Europe) and WORLD 43 million ton in 2050 (World Economic Forum).
As such, Blade–Made operates on levels R0 (refuse) and R7 (Repurpose) of the circular economy ladder.
We have full-service solution with two world-first applications :
- Blades -> Noise Barriers (Blade Barrier)
- Nacelles -> Micro Homes
Offering a fitting and effective (re) purpose for all GFRP elements that become available after decommissioning as well as the proven offer for the transformation to sustainable infratstucture and construction.
Blade–Made is a spin-off of architecture firm Superuse Studios that realised the first ever object from discarded wind turbine blades in 2008 with the iconic playground Wikado. In 2021 the co-founders flipped the model to an impact driven mission to save composites from the wind industry of becoming waste.Thus also making a serious appeal to the wind sector to not only develop but also commit to closing the loop after energy generation life cycle is at its end.
With decommissioning becoming eminent and a self-deployed landfill ban, combined with limited recycling and lifetime extension possibilities and chemical recycling still in its infancy stage, repurposing is the preferable and necessary strategy for sustainability.
We would like to reach out to commercial (launching customer), operational, sector and investment partners to join forces for impact.
Be Bold Be Blade–Made.
