Our distributor worldwide YANMAR has successfully equipped a 52 foot multihull hitchhiker SV X-IT sailing catamaran with a new propulsion system: an innovative installation of two Dtorque 111 turbo diesel outboards.
This opens up a promising new potential for using modern diesel outboards on larger sailing catamarans. The project, in which two 50 hp Dtorque engines are mounted in a central hull position on hydraulic plates in sea-going nacelles, has achieved impressive results in sea trials, with improved performance reported both under engine and under sail.
The first serial production diesel outboard with dual crankshaft and the smallest diesel outboard with common rail fuel injection, our Dtorque offers a range of benefits, including a remarkable torque output peaking at 111 Nm at 2,500 rpm, fuel economy, safety, reliability, and low noise and vibration, that could now be experienced by catamaran owners.
Using Dtorque outboards supplied by YANMAR’s Australia distributor Power Equipment, the radical installation was devised by Ballina Slipways shipwright Michael Cocks and catamaran X-IT owner Ilan Sebban. Ilan wanted to replace his cockpit-mounted 60 hp petrol outboards for a safer and more reliable alternative, and had discounted diesel inboards due to sailing hull compromises. The smooth-running 804cc Neander-engineered outboards were selected as the ideal solution, with torque performance surpassing the leading 70 hp fuel-injected, four-stroke gasoline outboards, fuel consumption of less than 12 litres per hour and expected service life in excess of 10,000 hours.
The midships position was integral to the plan to make the boat sit better in the water, with sea-breaking pods then designed and fabricated in front of each outboard position to mount the Dtorque engines when in use and protect and reduce drag when retracted from service. Jacking plates allow both proper water entry for the outboard legs and full retraction away from the splash whilst under sail.
On the cat’s return sail, it hit close to 19 knots on multiple sections of the trip and averaged 9.5 knots under sail, with improved boat tracking in the new configuration, particularly with downwind sailing. The performance of the new Dtorque diesel outboards also delivered some impressive numbers, logging just over 10 knots on the sea trials and a similar speed under motor on open waters, with a notable lack of vibration under power and cool running temperatures below 40°C.
Justin Hogen, YANMAR MARINE INTERNATIONAL, Area Sales Manager Outboard Engines, said: “This interesting catamaran repower project confirms the capabilities and versatility of this unique diesel outboard and its appeal for a wide range of applications. The combination of long range, low running costs, durability and low emissions offers key benefits, while boat owners will also appreciate the increased on-board comfort, safety and minimal maintenance.”
A modern classic of the larger recreational multi-hulls, SV X-IT was the last built by the founder of Hitchhiker designs, John Hitch, in around 2005. With the backup of reliable and capable diesel power, owner Ilan plans to sail her to Cape Town next year.

From 18 to 26 January 2020, the world’s largest water sports fair “boot” took place for the 51th time in Düsseldorf. It was a great success.
Our Dtorque was presented in 2 halls:
Our worldwide distribution partner YANMAR will exhibited the Dtorque in hall 9 on stand 9E37, answered all questions about the product and was happy to take your orders.
For the distribution of the Dtorque in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia Friedrich Marx GmbH & Co.KG is responsible for the Dtorque and presented it in Hall 3 / A89.
We look forward to welcoming you to our stand at the SMM in Hamburg from 8 to 11:
Until then: stay healthy!
After his appointment as Chief Technology Officer expired on 31 March 2018, Claus Brüstle moved to his new external function as a consulting engineer of the company.
At the last Supervisory Board meeting, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Holger Bredfeldt had already appreciated the many years of constructive cooperation with Claus Brüstle.

From 20 to 28 January 2018 the water sports world looked to Düsseldorf with enthusiasm and this year the boot Düsseldorf closed with a record result:
1,923 exhibitors from 68 countries presented yachts, boats and accessories for all areas of water sports on 220,000 square metres of exhibition space. Trade fair chairman Werner M. Dornscheidt: ”This result is unique in the industry. No other water sports fair reflects the diversity of the entire world market as the boot does.”
With 247,000 visitors from 94 countries (2017: 242,000 visitors), in the corridors of the 16 exhibition halls there was a lively drift and the boot 2018 underscored its number 1 position as an international industry get-together. Petros Michelidakis, director of boot, describes the situation clearly: “Our strategy of further internationalizing the boot has been a success. This is now apparent in the structure of the visitor clientele.” (Source: boot.de)
Our Neander Dtorque was represented three times at the 49th boot: In hall 10 we presented our turbodiesel outboard engine on a joint stand with our worldwide sales partner Yanmar and the company Marx as sales partner for the countries D, A, CH, HUN, SVK and CZE. In this way, we were able to pass interested customers on directly to the respective sales contact person.
A special attraction on our stand was our “round table” at which we were able to show the engine parts of the Dtorque to touch and to answer more complex technical questions.
Interest in our engine was great, we counted an astonishing number of potential customers for a leisure fair such as boat builders or interested parties from the lifeboat sector, commercial fishing, public institutions, offshore industry or tender boats for super yachts and received very positive feedback on the degree of innovation of our product.
Perhaps one or two visitors had also become aware of our stand through the report on ADAC online.
In Hall 4, another Neander Dtorque was presented at the booth of Marine accessories Europe from Yanmar’s worldwide dealer network.
And as the crowning highlight of the trade fair, a Neander Dtorque outboard motor “welcomed” the large number of journalists and high-profile guests as a real eye-catcher in the entrance area of the press centre.

On the world’s largest maritime equipment show, the METS TRADE(Marine Equipment Trade Show) in Amsterdam, our distribution partner Yanmar Marine International presents the Neander Dtorque 111 at their booth from 14 to 16 November.
From the first day on visitors were very interested in our unique product. The colleagues around Yanmar’s Global Sales Manager, Floris Lettinga, answered numerous and detailed questions. Even the president of Yanmar Marine International, Shiori Nagata, did not miss the opportunity to be photographed together with our managing director, Lutz W. Lester, in front of the Dtorque 111.
The highlight of the day was a visit to Zodiac Milpro, a commercial boat manufacturer, a supplier of RIBs and inflatable boats for the commercial sector. Zodiac Milpro is convinced by the performance and advantages of the Dtorque 111 after their own tests and trials. It was decided to design a future trade fair appearance together and thus give customers the opportunity to experience a perfectly coordinated system of boat and engine.
Innovative developments can not only be seen at the METS at Yanmar’s booth, but also at our exclusive assembling partner Steyr Motors: On Tuesday at eleven o’ clock the presentation ceremony of the SEC4 engine, newly developed by Steyr Motors, took place.
This is the world premiere of a turbocharged four-cylinder monobloc engine with a common-rail injection system specially developed for maritime applications.
In addition to the technical refinements, the engine is characterised by a redesign, which now also enables applications in which greater emphasis is placed on the visual experience. The presentation was skillfully moderated by Michael Aschaber, Managing Director of Steyr Motors GmbH.
