Krill Design – Circular Materials for a Sustainable Future
Overview
Krill Design is a Milan-based cleantech startup revolutionizing the use of organic waste (such as orange peel, coffee silver skin, bran, etc.) through the development of Rekrill®, a proprietary, patented biomaterial made from agro-industrial by-products such as citrus peels, coffee grounds, and other natural waste streams. Rekrill® is a 100% bio-based, biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics.
With a vertically integrated model—from organic waste collection to final product manufacturing—Krill Design helps brands and industries transition toward a circular economy, offering sustainable solutions in sectors such as furniture, design, packaging, fashion, consumer electronics, and toys.
Our Mission
To accelerate the ecological transition by transforming food industry by-products into high-performance biomaterials, replacing polluting plastics and enabling a new generation of sustainable products.
Our Vision
To become a global leader in circular biomaterials, empowering businesses to embrace sustainability without compromising performance, design, or scalability.
About Rekrill®
Rekrill® is the result of extensive R&D and is protected by proprietary formulations and production processes. It offers excellent mechanical and thermal properties, comparable to conventional plastics, while drastically reducing environmental impact.
Each kilogram of Rekrill® saves up to 70% of CO₂ emissions compared to fossil-based plastics. It is suitable for 3D printing, injection molding, rotational molding, extrusion, and film production, making it highly versatile across industries.
Technology & Production
We operate our own biomaterial R&D lab, enabling a closed-loop and zero-waste production model. In 2025, Krill Design will launch a new production plant to scale up to 4000 tons/year, with expansion planned to 12000 tons/year in three years.
We are also developing in-house capabilities for PHA production (polyhydroxyalkanoate), the main bio-polymer component of Rekrill®, to achieve greater supply chain control and cost efficiency.
Capital Raised & Growth Strategy
In early 2025, Krill Design successfully closed a €6 million Series A funding round, welcoming three strategic investors into the cap table: Algebris Investments, Primo Capital (through its climate-focused fund Primo Climate), and Crédit Agricole Italia.
This significant investment marks a pivotal milestone in the company’s growth journey and will support:
- The development of a new, cutting-edge production facility to scale the manufacturing of Rekrill® in response to growing demand;
- The international expansion of Krill Design’s operations and commercial presence;
- Continued investment in R&D, to refine new formulations of the material and increase industrial compatibility across various sectors.
These resources enable Krill Design to solidify its role as a frontrunner in the biomaterials industry, offering a true alternative to petrochemical plastics for global brands seeking sustainability.
Looking Ahead – Series B Funding
To further accelerate scale-up, meet global demand, and expand Rekrill®’s industrial applications, Krill Design is planning a €20 million Series B round by the end of 2026. This funding will support:
- Capacity increase to 25,000 tons/year;
- Internal production of bio-based polymers;
- Entry into strategic international markets;
- Strategic partnerships with high-volume industries such as cosmetics, fashion, packaging, and mobility.
Krill Design is currently open to connecting with corporate partners, impact investors, and industrial players who are committed to building a circular, low-impact materials economy.
