When we first launched our inflatables , we were approached by several surgeons who devised revolutionary procedures using compressed air. Today we are launching our IxS, the inflatable for multiple applications, which makes this possible! The IxS is available in different shapes and sizes. The medical staff can choose the shape and size which fits best their surgical / medical procedure and patient. One example on how the Ergotrics IxS inflatable can revolutionise surgery and healthcare?



Our Sickle Inflatable (IxS-Sickle) is used for the ALIF procedure. Before anesthesia, the inflatable was taped at the correct level on the patient’s back. After removal of the intervertebral disc, the IxS-Sickle was inflated. This created an indirect distraction of the lumbar vertebrae which facilitated the introduction of the cage and gave a good lordosis to the lumbar spine. After insertion of the cage, per-operative deflation caused good compression. Ergotrics LAUNCHES... the Inflatable Prone Support EXTRA LARGE. Specifically designed to tilt patients upto 180kg, this size specific support is a revolution in prone positioning!

"Realizing this innovation was critical in the strategic plan of Ergotrics," explains Inge Bruynooghe, CEO. "We are now preparing with BGI, a tech-based accelerator spin out of MIT Portugal, the introduction of inflatables in the USA. This product launch was an important milestone for the US market, where the number of obese patients is higher and increasing."

The extra large IPS is optimally designed to support the rib cage and pelvis while allowing the soft tissue and abdomen to hang freely. The aim is to reduce Intra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) and preventing venous congestion, which is further investigated by Dr F. van Eijs, anaesthetist in the Netherlands. The use of compressed air instead of manual labour is an ergonomic breakthrough in the operating room and intensive care unit. 

An international report by UNAIDS Health Innovation Exchange has ranked Belgium the top country in Europe for innovation relating to the coronavirus, and fourth in the world. Ergotrics was singled out for praise in the report for their response to the crisis.

Turnhout, Belgium - 30/03/2020 Medtech scale-up Ergotrics from Belgium already successfully launched an innovative solution to lift and position patients before spine surgery. Based on the same know-how of ergonomics and hygiene in combination with compressed air as a power source, Ergotrics now developed a solution for prone ventilation in the intensive care unit.  Given the recent corona outbreak, this development arrived just in time for many patients and nurses.

"We saw the incredible efforts of health workers in the fight against the Covid-19 (corona) virus," explains CEO Inge Bruynooghe. "The pandemic forced us to give priority to the certification of Inflatable Prone Ventilation Support (IPV). Rapid prototyping based on the current supports for surgeries in prone position has been used to shorten the innovation process.”

The idea wasn't new. In 2015, Ergotrics did research in collaboration with Ghent University on how to use this technology in intensive care units. Scientific studies emphasize the benefits of ventilation in prone position. The experience of the Italian hospitals confirmed the advantage of this technique for corona patients. The Ergotrics cushions lift the patients into an optimal position for ventilation, allowing the abdomen to hang free. This can improve oxygen uptake in the patient's blood.

Several intensivists testified on television about the heavy work of lifting and tilting the many corona patients who have to be ventilated alternately in supine and prone position. The uniqueness of the Ergotrics solution is to use compressed air instead of manual force. In combination with an inflatable mat it is possible to perform this work ergonomically with 2 nurses less.  

Hospitals in Belgium already use the Ergotrics cushions for the ventilation of Corona patients in prone position. Both production and logistics are running at full speed in order to assist as many intensive care units as possible in their care for these critical patients.

Munich, November 28th, 2018 – European Patent Bulletin publishes Ergotrics first patent "method and system for positioning a patient"

The patent policy is an important pillar in Ergotrics' product innovation strategy. The milestone reached today is the result of good cooperation for years between Ergotrics and the renowned patent agency EP&C which recently also opened an office in Turnhout.

Shortly after the grant by the Netherlands Patent Office in December 2015, Nyske Blokhuis, patent attorney and Associate Partner at EP&C, advised to apply for the European patent. The European Patent Office judged the application as new and inventive on all 19 claims. Today, the keystone of this application has been reached with the publication in the European Patent Bulletin.

The second product innovation of Ergotrics is going through a similar process. All 21 claims about the inflation board were accepted under the patent “method and system for rotating a patient.” When this patent is granted and published, Ergotrics will realize the European IP protection for “inflatables in healthcare.” Patents in US, China and India are also granted or in application.
