EIC Accelerator Opportunities for Innovators in Climate and Sustainability Solutions

EIC Accelerator Opportunities for Innovators in Climate and Sustainability Solutions

The European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator is one of the most prominent funding programmes of the European Commission under the Horizon Europe framework. Its purpose is to support SMEs and startups to bring groundbreaking innovations to the market. It offers both grant funding and equity investment depending on the applicant company’s needs and best fit in the funding type depending on their stage.

Priority Impacts in the 2025 Work Programme

The EIC Accelerator dedicates specific attention and funding to priority areas defined under its Challenge Calls, which are updated year by year and revolve around major societal and environmental needs. For 2025, two challenges are particularly relevant to companies innovating in climate action, decarbonization, renewable energy, waste management, etc.:

  1. Biotechnology-driven Low-emission Food and Feed Production Systems: This challenge focuses on improving the sustainability, efficiency, and resilience of the European agri-food sector. Priority areas include biopesticides, biostimulants, and microbial fertilizers derived from waste streams, precision biotech for crop and livestock farming to optimize inputs and reduce waste, methane mitigation in ruminants via advanced feed solutions, and precision fermentation to create sustainable food and feed ingredients. Waste valorization technologies converting agricultural by-products into valuable resources also align with this challenge.
  2. Breakthrough Innovations for Future Mobility: This challenge supports transformative solutions for cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transportation systems, aligning with global decarbonization efforts. Priority areas include eco-friendly design and operation of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, and rail; disruptive technologies to reduce emissions and noise in heavy-duty transport and multimodal systems; sustainable fuels for aviation and maritime sectors, including retrofitting; and advanced digital tools, such as AI and sensors, to improve autonomous transport, connectivity, energy efficiency, and smart charging functionalities.

With approximately €50 million allocated to each of these Challenges in 2025, it is definitely worth for applicants to tailor their project proposals to address these challenges and maximize their chances of success.
