Mogale Pictures is an award winning Production company that is focused on creating stories that centres African women, and the queer community. These stories how how patriarchy impacts people who have historically been ignored, and how self love and the owning of one's values, can help to fight against limiting and constraining views- on a personal and political level. The owner of Mogale Pictures is Godisamang Khunou, and she has been recognised as one of the fifteen visionaries from around the world, and was selected for the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship, and the 2023 Creative Producers Indaba.
The Documentary Series SHARP END OF A KNIFE is currently in Development has won the Best Non-Fiction award at the 2022 Durban Film Mart. The series follows the lives of eight women in the Johannesburg Correctional Services, while they serve life sentences for the murder of their husbands after they suffered years of abuse in their marriages. The series was invited to The Journey of a Netflix Documentary Series in 2023 for collaborations on original Documentaries for one of the biggest streamers in the world.
The Documentary Feature BLACK WOMEN AND SEX has won The Development prize for Best Female Director by the Saxon State Minister at DOK Leipzig, The Zonta Elster Female Talent award at DOK Leipzig International Co-Production Market, and the Most Promising Film award at the Durban Film Mart in 2019. The Documentary is currently in Post-Production and was selected for the Encounters Rough Cut Lab in 2022.
The special for the Documentary on BLACK WOMEN AND SEX is a Virtual Reality Experience, which explores the spirituality of sex through life under water- showing representation for mystical African creatures that represent mermaids. This experience won the Best XR at the 2021 Digital Lab Africa. The film pitched at New Images: Garage Stories in 2021, and further developed through Electric South: New Dimensions Lab.
Our Second Documentary feature titled POWA was an official pitch project at the 2023 Fame Week. The film was workshopped and developed through the Creative Producers Indaba, which took place at the Atlas workshops at the Marrakesh International Film Festival in November 2023, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2024.
The investors in the company include the National Film and Video Foundation, the Gauteng Film Commission, Tshimolong Precinct, and the Goethe Institute. the film markets that have supported the work include the Durban Film Mart, DOK Leipzig International Co-Production Market, Fame Week and the Encounters Film Festival.
