In current Li-ion battery cells, the graphite anode is the bottleneck in increasing the energy density. Silicon provides a tenfold capacity over graphite as anode material. The challenge however is to use silicon in a mechanical stable manner, as silicon swells during lithiation. Consequently, only a small percentage of silicon is used in modern composite carbon-silicon anodes, enabling a small improvement of energy density.
