About your organization / profile

HIL is developing ultra-compact, high-performance systems for cancer Proton Therapy - based on technological breakthroughs achieved at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Proton Therapy (PT) is among the most advanced forms of radiotherapy. It is well-established, enjoys favorable reimbursement, and can benefit over 1 Million patients annually. Globally, fewer than 5% of patients have access to PT; this is due to prohibitively high costs of acquisition and operation. HIL aims to make PT affordable to every midsize hospital/clinic, and thereby accessible to every patient who could benefit from it, around the world.

HIL brings 21st-century technology – high-intensity lasers, nanotech, and advanced magnetics – to a field largely dominated by World-War-II-era technology (synchrotrons and cyclotrons were invented in the 1930’s and 40’s). We think it is about time.

HIL employs a novel laser-based, nanotech-enabled approach to proton acceleration – this allows us to replace a traditional proton accelerator the size of a truck and the weight of a 747 Jumbo Jet (200 tons), with one the size of a small dishwasher and the weight of a refrigerator (200 kg).

HIL uses advanced magnetics for beam shaping and delivery to the tumor inside the patient  which allows us to shrink the treatment room footprint by 50% (shrink volume by 70%) relative to the most compact competitor systems, while delivering therapy from 360 degrees (compared with the competitors 180 degrees).
