Macroalgae to bioenergy and biomaterials - reducing fossil fuels and CO2 emissions
Given escalating global concerns regarding fossil fuel dependency and the urgent need for carbon mitigation strategies, the demand for sustainable bio-based alternatives has never been greater. Macroalgae farming has emerged as a promising solution, and scaled up production is already in place, mainly in Asia.
Our approach is twofold. We firstly aim to bring macroalgae farming technologies to countries that are not currently using it, and secondly, we focus on new technologies to use the macroalgae biomass, creating multiple revenue streams from bioenergy to fertilizer, and designing a circular economy within coastal regions.
- Establishing Macroalgae Farms for Carbon Capture and Ecosystem Revival:
We replicate tried-and-proven macroalgae cultivation techniques, establishing farms that serve as potent carbon sinks. Our farms also absorb pollutants, heavy metals, and toxins from water and air, mitigating ocean acidification and improving water quality. As macroalgae thrives in polluted waters, its cultivation acts as a water filter, helping to restore the natural habitat and rejuvenate biodiversity.
2. Innovative Bioenergy/ bioproduct Development
Once cultivated, our focus shifts to maximising the potential of the macroalgae biomass. We extract high-value liquid properties to produce bioethanol, and valorise the remaining biomass to produce additional bioproducts including fertiliser and water-resistant polymers. Our holistic solutions promote carbon neutrality and improved ocean health at the same time as ensuring a cycle of commercially-viable supply and demand.
