Development of AI-based Sign Language Avatar Translation for Digtal Platforms for better digital participation of deaf and heraring impaired people.
The World Federation of the Deaf has reported that nearly 70 million individuals communicate using sign language worldwide. Within the EU, there are approximately 22.5 million individuals with varying degrees of hearing impairment, including one million deaf people. Deaf individuals, whose native language is sign language, encounter substantial barriers when engaging in the Digital Society, where text and spoken language prevail. The digital realm presents significant challenges for the deaf community in accessing online information, services, and opportunities, which are essential in today’s increasingly digital world. These challenges underscore the pressing need for effective sign language translation services to bridge the communication gap the online world presents.
Despite legislative initiatives promoting digital accessibility, such as the European Digital Accessibility Guidelines and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, there is a significant gap in the practical provision of accurate and culturally sensitive sign language translation services these regulations require. The current solutions can only partially fulfil these regulations due to the severely limited translation resources. Therefore, existing solutions continue to fall short of providing a cost-effective, inclusive, and effective means of bridging the communication divide between the deaf community and the digital realm, necessitating technical solutions that facilitate widespread translation services on a broad scale.
Because of this, alangu is embarking on a groundbreaking endeavour to revolutionise digital accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. alangu will introduces cutting-edge technology to facilitate seamless digital communication and dismantle the language and communicative barriers that have hindered the participation of millions of deaf individuals in the Digital Society.
alangu has already developed a technlogy and based on this a first product for municipalities and adresses applications for public institutions, transportation, museums, and the private businesses (e. g. e-commece, banks & insurances) throughout the EU. By fostering diverse partnerships with leading institutions in the field and leveraging the support of existing customers across Germany, alangu aims to fulfil the immense market potential in the digital accessibility landscape.
