À propos
Introduction:
MIMA Technologies is a recently established international MedTech startup based in Athens, Greece (www.mima-technologies.com). MIMA stands for "Microwave Imaging for Medical Applications". With a complementary, synergistic multi-country setup (Greece, France, Ireland) and 8-years+ collaborators, the founding team has a proven track record in the field of Microwave Breast Imaging (MWBI) with experience of TRL4-5 MWBI scanners in two clinical trials (about 100 patients).
As first intended purpose, we focus on the early diagnosis of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breasts, for whom mammography detects less than 60% of cancers. This concerns an underserved population, representing approximately half of working women and most of women under 50, for whom early diagnosis is crucial in terms of survival rates.
MIMA Technologies offers a 3D imaging method without ionizing radiation or compression, using very low-power electromagnetic waves. Previous and published results of clinical trials using this technology have demonstrated promising sensitivity for dense breasts. Furthermore, the method is based on radar imaging, enabling automated reporting of suspicious regions-of-interest in the volumetric breast image and computation of characteristics of those regions for malignancy scoring. This constitutes a unique competitive advantage, even compared to more advanced, established breast imaging methods such as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) or automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), eliminating lengthy interpretation delays.
The Founders Team:
Dr. Agathi (Angie) Fasoula – Greece – MIMA Co-Founder, Chief Science and Technology Officer
www.linkedin.com/in/angie-fasoula-18b78a221/
www.researchgate.net/profile/Angie-Fasoula
She brings nearly two decades of research and industrial experience in radar signal processing, imaging algorithms, and microwave systems, including leading the full development cycle of a former Microwave Breast Imaging system (Wavelia) from concept to clinical trials (2017-2025).
Prof. Michael Kerin – Ireland – MIMA Co-Founder, Clinical Strategy and Clinical Lead
https://research.universityofgalway.ie/en/persons/michael-kerin/
He is an eminent surgeon and researcher with over 450 scientific publications and a pivotal role in shaping breast cancer care policy. As Principal Investigator of Wavelia's MWBI clinical trials (2018-2025), his expertise ensures robust clinical validation and strategic alignment of MIMA's radar imaging modality with patient needs.
Luc Duchesne, Msc – France – MIMA Co-Founder, Chief Operations Officer
www.linkedin.com/in/luc-duchesne/
He is a pioneer in RF engineering and microwave hardware design, with decades of experience leading innovative projects for aerospace and medical imaging applications. He specialized in Microwave Breast Imaging since 2018 and led the former Wavelia project until 2025.
The Project:
MIMA's medical imaging diagnostic device is a scalable deep-tech development, with potential for adaptation to the diagnostic imaging of superficial soft-tissue organs, other than breast (e.g. thyroid). It also benefits from strong IP assets, with an initial patent filed in January 2026 with the EPO protecting a novel imaging method, and at least five identified novel technological elements constituting the new MIMA scanner, which will be protected by four additional patent applications over the next two years. Finally, it features a strategic market fit: rising breast cancer rates among young women, the demand for screening in this underserved population, US legislation regarding dense breasts notification, emerging in EU, the global shift towards non-invasive diagnostics, and Al integration.
The project unfolds in a two-phase development roadmap, up to Minimum Viable Product (MVP) readiness and commercialization. Phase 1 (2026-2028): patented prototypes at TRL6, clinically validated in the frame of a pilot clinical study. Phase 2 (2029-2031): device design freeze and duplication, multi-site confirmatory clinical studies, CE marking of MVP by 2031.
Seeking early Funding:
Besides non-dilutive funding, we are currently seeking to raise private funding in the frame of a pre-seed round ideally sized to 1.2M, to assure a minimum of 20-month financial viability of the project and reach of the major milestone of having our device prototype fully integrated towards clinical testing and validation. However, in case the 1.2M appears too high for our first investors' aggregate, we are alternatively considering a milestone-based split of the round. An initial 600k pre-seed would assure at least 10-month financial viability and reach of the device design and validation at sub-system level (novel /patentable modules).
