Executive Summary

Bulgarian SME Sea Harmony has produced ORTO (Ocean Reef Tower Oases), an integrated aquaculture concept based on the company’s patented artificial vertical mussel reef technology, “Pisa Reef“. ORTO adds multi-species extensive aquaculture and proprietary automated harvesting techniques, and a Pisa Reef production conveyor line designed for rapid scaling. We create a storm resisting, scalable, efficient, sustainable, low-dependant, low-carbon, multi-species food source.

Pisa Reefs are ideal locations for mussels, which rapidly reverse Eutrophication, restoring deoxygenated “Dead zones” and renewing robust food chains including shrimps, snails, and fish. Pisa Reefs are also a carbon sink as effective as the same area of forest.

Pisa Reefs are suspended between ocean surface and bottom at depths down to 100m, avoiding the problems from sea traffic, weather, surface pollution, and bottom contamination which limit other aquacultures. ORTO can be operated in open seas across a far greater area than current technologies can use. Making even a fraction of the continental shelf available to aquaculture has the potential to exponentially scale marine food production from today’s limited volumes. A real industrial scale aquaculture alternative can address the 70% global calorie gap predicted by 2050.
