Instituto Pedro Nunes: Championing Innovation and Technology Transfer in Europe
Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), a private non-profit organisation, is a beacon of innovation and technology transfer in Europe. Born out of an initiative by the University of Coimbra in 1991, IPN has since been instrumental in forging robust connections between the scientific, technological, and business sectors.
With a firm foothold in three complementary areas – research and technological development; incubation and acceleration of tech-based businesses and ideas; and highly specialised training – IPN is playing an integral role in shaping Europe’s technological future.
IPN’s technological infrastructure comprises six cutting-edge Research, Technology & Development (RTD) laboratories spread across diverse technological domains: automatics, materials, informatics, phytopathology, electroanalysis, and geotechnics. These labs are testament to IPN’s commitment to fostering technological advancement and nurturing groundbreaking ideas.
At the heart of IPN's activities is the Department of Knowledge Valorisation and Innovation. Here, innovation activities are promoted and technology-based entrepreneurship is vigorously supported, reinforcing IPN's stand as an unrivalled incubator for novel ideas and pioneering tech companies.
Notably, IPN also coordinates ESA Space Solutions Portugal, an invaluable platform for space and repurposing space technology. This initiative encompasses ESA BIC Portugal, a dedicated incubation programme; ESA Ambassadors Portugal, a system of funding and support services for non-space companies; and ESA Technology Brokers, a service providing funding and brokerage.
Today, IPN is known for its remarkable work in accelerating Europe's growth through smart innovation and technology transfer. Spearheading this mission are four exceptional individuals:
