Innovation Scoreboard 2023: Where Does Your Country Stand in the European Innovation Landscape?
In the ever-evolving realm of global innovation, Europe has always been a front-runner. The European Innovation Scoreboard 2023 offers a comprehensive overview of how different EU countries perform in innovation. As per the latest findings, we witness an intriguing pattern of growth and development across the European Union, highlighting both progress and potential areas for improvement.
Understanding the Scoreboard
The Summary Innovation Index, a composite indicator, evaluates the performance of EU national innovation systems based on 32 indicators. These indicators collectively shape our understanding of each member state's innovation capabilities.
In 2023, European countries are categorized into four distinct groups based on their innovation performance relative to the EU average:
- Innovation Leaders (performance above 125% of the EU average): Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
- Strong Innovators (100% - 125%): Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
- Moderate Innovators (70% - 100%): Including countries like Hungary, which has moved up from a lower group.
- Emerging Innovators (below 70%): Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia.
Performance Trends and Convergence
From 2016 to 2023, 25 EU countries improved their innovation performance. Notably, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, and the Czech Republic saw increases of over 20 percentage points. This positive change signifies a convergence trend, where lower-performing countries are growing faster than the higher-performing ones, reducing the innovation performance gap across the EU.
The Geographic Concentration of Innovation
The Innovation Leaders and most Strong Innovators are geographically concentrated in Western and Northern Europe. In contrast, Moderate and Emerging Innovators are primarily found in Southern and Eastern Europe. This geographic distribution reflects the diverse innovation panorama of the EU, with a need for balanced growth and support across all regions.
