About your organization / profile
We are two agronomists (MSc in Agriculture ETHZ) with experience in the implementation of commercial plantations in Africa and in the management coffee plantations and one economist (CFA, Master of Arts in Business Administration UZH) with experience in business planning.
The team is complemented by a Zambian director who is well connected with regional stakeholders and a Zambian managing director. Additionally, we benefit from a wealth of experience from our network of mentors working as entrepreneurs and active in tropical agriculture.
On the 770-hectare property in Northern Zambia we plan to produce high-quality Arabica coffee. However, only 300 hectares are used, where the coffee grows below native trees providing shading for plants and workers. In full production, we expect a yearly harvest of 1.8 tons per hectares, respectively 540 tons in total. The remaining 470 hectares will be left in their original state as Miombo forest as ecological compensation area.
We are using the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through a coffee outgrower scheme small-holder farmers are enabled to link and sell their coffee to better paying markets. This increases the livelihoods of 15’000 households. Forest and wildlife are protected on the 5 km2 conservation area. This service has an unmeasurable long-time benefit for the whole ecosystem. Without protection the forest would be chopped down and burned tree by tree until it’s lost forever.
